Stevia has been studied and demonstrated to be safe for all populations
For centuries, people in South America have safely used stevia to sweeten foods and medicines. And today, studies have shown that the historical and anecdotal evidence was right all along: stevia is safe for everyone.
Stevia has been studied across multiple species and end-points, creating a comprehensive body of literature about it’s safety. Studies have included:
Genetic toxicity, carcinogenicity
Pharmacokinetics
Toxicity studies: short-term, sub-chronic and chronic
Reproductive toxicity & Teratogenicity (birth defects)
Human clinical studies
Regulatory authorities around the world have evaluated this evidence and found no known adverse effects at the levels steviol glycosides, the compounds that give stevia its sweet taste, are typically consumed.
A key study, summarized below, has shown that there are no generational effects from stevia use. An animal study following the health of subjects over two generations, researchers tracked weight, fertility, survival and growth in offspring, as well as other key factors. The study showed no reproductive or developmental effects in 2 generations of subjects using purified steviol glycosides. This data convincingly demonstrates the safety of stevia in both pregnancy and children.
While generations of people have used stevia for its sweetening properties and general health benefits, we now have research that proves it’s safe for pregnant women, children and adults.
